Scalp Care with Sue: The Summer Hair Habit Your Hair Will Thank You For

When July arrives, we tend to think about lighter colours, holiday hair, soft waves and that glossy summer finish. But before we get carried away with styling, colour and beachy texture, I always like to bring things back to where healthy hair really begins: the scalp.

At HQ Hair Lounge & Academy, scalp care is a big part of what I do because beautiful hair needs a healthy foundation. You can have the best colour, cut or treatment in the world, but if the scalp is congested, irritated or out of balance, your hair will struggle to look and feel its best.
Why scalp care matters
I often say that scalp care is the quiet hero of good hair. It does not always get the attention it deserves, but it can make such a difference.
A healthy scalp helps support natural hair growth, comfort and overall hair condition. When we ignore it, we may start to notice signs such as excess oiliness, flakes, sensitivity, blocked follicles, product build-up or hair that feels heavy at the root.
Summer can make this worse. We are more likely to use styling sprays, oils, sun protection, dry shampoo and leave-in products. Add warm weather and perspiration into the mix, and the scalp can become a little overwhelmed.
That is why July is the perfect time to refresh your hair routine and pay closer attention to what is happening beneath the hair.

My go-to recommendation: milk_shake deep detox shampoo
For clients who need a proper cleanse without their hair feeling stripped, one product I often recommend is milk_shake deep detox shampoo.
It is designed to give the hair and scalp a professional-grade detox, helping to remove impurities, product residue and excess sebum. It is especially useful if your hair becomes oily quickly, feels weighed down, or has lost its usual shine.
What I like about this product is that it gives that beautifully clean, revived feeling while still leaving the hair soft and healthy-looking. It is a great option for those moments when your usual shampoo just does not feel like it is doing enough.

I would not necessarily suggest using a detox shampoo every single wash unless your scalp and hair genuinely need it. For many people, using it as a reset when there is noticeable build-up can work beautifully. The key is always choosing what your hair and scalp actually need, rather than guessing.
To use it, apply to damp hair, lather well and leave it for a few minutes before rinsing thoroughly. Let it do the work. Think of it as a deep clean for the roots, not a rushed splash-and-go.
How I can help with scalp care at HQ Hair
At HQ Hair, my Hair & Scalp Wellness services are all about understanding what is really happening with your hair and scalp, not just treating what you can see on the surface.
A Hair & Scalp Analysis gives me the chance to look more closely at the condition of your hair and the health of your scalp. I can assess the strength and integrity of the hair, identify whether it may need moisture, protein or a different approach, and check for signs that could be affecting comfort, growth or overall condition.
This might include build-up, dryness, dandruff, closed follicles, hair loss or miniaturisation of the hair strands. Once we know what is going on, we can create a much more personalised plan, rather than relying on guesswork.

I am also trained in Melanoma and Skin Cancer Early Detection, so during scalp checks I will always advise if I notice anything that looks concerning or needs further attention. Scalp care is not just about helping your hair look lovely. It is part of looking after your wider wellbeing too.
For clients who need a deeper refresh, I also offer Dermabrasion Scalp Exfoliation. I often describe this as a facial for the scalp. It gently exfoliates the scalp surface and helps remove build-up around the follicles, leaving the scalp feeling cleaner, smoother and more balanced. I can also use microscopic images before and after the treatment, so you can actually see the difference for yourself.
For those concerned about thinning hair, I can offer tailored advice, talk through suitable options and recommend supportive products where appropriate, including Nioxin kits. I also stock Glowwa Vitamins for clients who would like to support their hair health from within.

Signs your scalp might need attention
You may benefit from scalp care support if you are noticing:
Hair becoming greasy very quickly after washing
Flaking, itching or tightness
Hair feeling heavy, dull or coated
More shedding than usual
Thinning areas or changes in density
Sensitivity around the scalp
Product build-up that does not seem to shift
Colour not looking as fresh or vibrant as expected
Sometimes, the solution is as simple as adjusting your shampoo routine. Other times, your scalp may need a closer look, a treatment plan or a more tailored approach.
My July scalp care tip
This month, take a moment before washing your hair and really notice how your scalp feels. Is it comfortable? Oily? Dry? Tight? Flaky? Tender? Your scalp gives clues, but we are often too busy focusing on the ends of the hair to notice them.
Healthy summer hair starts at the root. A good detox shampoo, a thoughtful routine and professional scalp support can make a real difference to how your hair behaves, shines and grows.
If you are unsure what your scalp needs, book in with me at HQ Hair Lounge & Academy. Together, we can take a proper look, understand what is going on and create a plan that supports your hair from root to tip. Call Sue on 07414 402693.
